I doubt the turtles qualify for Obamacare, but they get great treatment at the Turtle Hospital (www.turtlehospital.org) located at Mile Marker 48.5 in Marathon. No questions asked, no forms to fill out, and no enrollment websites to battle.
We should be so lucky.... We are beginning to realize that one of the challenges of being an RV Nomad for any length of time is access to medical care, getting prescriptions filled etc when you are in a new location every month or even more frequently. Your doctor, hospital and pharmacy are back "home" so who do you go see when you need a prescription refilled or a doctors visit for some routine ailment? The normal red tape is now twice as thick while medical records are obtained and the powers to be try to make sure you aren't some homeless addict trying to obtain via your (unacceptable) out of state RX, some drug for a use other than its intended medicinal purpose. So lesson #3 for us. We have requested copies of all our medical records so they are immediately available to us ( stored on our "cloud" server) should we need them. And we will get a 3 or 6 month supply of any meds before we hit the road next time.
Anyway, back to the turtles. The Turtle Hospital provides space (Direct waterfront!) and building needed to care for sea turtles.
Since its founding in 1986 it has treated and released to their natural habitat over 1000 sea turtles- some as big as 250lb Loggerheads! They also conduct educational tours, do research, and promote sea turtle friendly legislation. As you can probably guess, a large % of the patients are there from entanglements with humans-fishing lines, boat collisions, ingestion of plastic bags, fish hooks etc. If your are in the area, its worth taking the educational tour.
